Happy Monday! Welcome to another edition of my series, Monday Meal Tip, where I share a tip to making healthy eating easier, faster, and delicious.
In general I prefer and advocate for making food from scratch, that way you can ensure that your food is made with clean, healthy ingredients. Of course making everything from scratch can take a lot of time, time that most of us don’t have. Maybe you’re balancing school and work or a full time job and being a mom or are a stay a home mom and managing your household. Whatever you’re situation, it’s not always practical to make everything from scratch. That’s where wisely selected pre-made foods come into play.
The Meal Tip
I rely on packaged food that’s also healthy. I say “wisely selected” above because most packaged foods don’t have clean ingredients. The kind of products I’m talking about are jarred pasta sauces, jarred pesto, chicken stock or broth, macaroni and cheese, etc. You must pay attention to the ingredient list because
not all most aren’t created equal (I’m looking at you Preggo and Ragu).
There are healthy options available though and at reasonable prices. I buy many food items at Walmart who now stocks organic products and healthy options, you just need to know what to look for. Instead of making these types of food from scratch, buy them pre-made to save yourself time while staying healthy. Below are three examples of items I buy regularly that are completely healthy. They use ingredients that I would use if I were to make the food myself.
Lucini Rustici Tomato Basil Ingredients
Organic fresh tomatoes, organic fresh vegetables (onions, carrots), organic extra virgin olive oil, organic fresh basil, sea salt.
Delallo Pomodoro Fresco Creamy Vodka Sauce Ingredients
Italian plum tomatoes, heavy cream, onions, crushed tomatoes, Parmesan cheese [cow’s milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes], extra virgin olive oil, Pecorino Romano cheese [pasteurized sheep’s milk, cheese cultures, rennet, salt], vodka, garlic, organic sugar, salt, basil, white pepper, citric acid, oregano
Mezzetta Basil Pesto
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fresh Basil, Parmesan Cheese (Milk, Cheese Cultures, Enzymes, Salt), Water, Almonds, Sea Salt, Fresh Garlic, Pine Nuts, Lactic Acid, Spices, Rosemary Extract, Ascorbic Acid.
These are three examples of the types of pre-made foods that I regularly buy to make my life easier. The ingredients are fairly clean. Yes, the vodka sauce has some sugar in it but it’s low enough in the ingredient list that I’m fine with it. As long as you are mindful of the ingredient list and choose foods with a healthy, limited list, it’s great to buy pre-made food and will save you a lot of time.
